The Poker Room Downstairs
At Grosvenor Casino Southend-on-Sea, the poker room is tucked away from the main action. You check in at reception, then head down the stairs into a self-contained area with capacity for around 100 players. It is set apart from the roulette tables, slots and general buzz upstairs, which keeps the focus on the tables in front of you instead of whatever is happening on the main floor.
The room has its own pace. You do not have slot machines chiming behind you, and you are not shouting over blackjack tables. For most players that makes it easier to settle in, watch what is going on, and just play.
Cash games are on every day. They usually start up in the evening, then roll through the night into the early hours. The default game is No Limit Texas Hold’em. Stakes are structured in steps - £20/£40/£80 at the lower end, then climbing up to £100/£200/£400 for bigger sessions. So you can sit in fairly small, or choose something sharper if that is what you are there for.
There is also a Bad Beat Jackpot tied into the South of England regional pool. The minimum advertised pot is £10,000. Worth having in the back of your mind before you buy in, because it changes the value of some hands.

Getting Into a Cash Game
You do not have to be a member to play. Regulars often sign up, but casual visitors can just check in as guests. At the door, reception will take a few details and sign you in, it is fairly quick. If you bring a car, use the casino car park and keep the ticket, as parking costs are reimbursed from midday until 6am.
The building sits on Church Road, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 2AL. From Southend Central station it is under half a mile on foot, roughly ten minutes at a normal walk. Southend Pier is not far either, which helps if you are trying to place it on the map for the first time.
Once you have walked through reception, getting a seat is pretty straightforward.
- Arrive at Church Road and sign in at reception, whether or not you hold membership.
- Ask staff about the latest cash game list and whether seats are open in the poker room.
- Go downstairs to the poker room entrance when they tell you the table is ready.
- Take the seat floor staff assign, then confirm the buy-in amount with the dealer.
- Swap your cash for chips either directly at the table or with the cashier first.
The dress code is smart casual. Grosvenor sites are usually not ok with trainers or obvious sportswear, so it is a good idea to check if what you are planning to wear will be alright, especially if you are travelling from outside Essex and do not want problems at the door.
One small practical thing that catches newer players: if you intend to play into the night, try to eat properly before you get there. After midnight, food service in most poker rooms is limited, and being tired, hungry and still sat at a table at 3am is a simple way to make poor decisions with real money in front of you.
Tournaments and the Wider Schedule
The room is not only about cash tables. Grosvenor Casino Southend-on-Sea also runs a regular tournament schedule during the week. Most of those events start in the early evening, usually around 7pm or 8pm, depending on the night and specific format. Structures, buy-ins and exact times shift over the month, so looking ahead matters a bit.
To keep track, Grosvenor pushes the full monthly schedule into the Grosvenor Poker Live app, which you can get from the Apple App Store. Once you select the Southend-on-Sea venue inside the app, you see a calendar that lists tournaments, start times and buy-ins, along with when cash games are planned to open. It is updated by venue, not as a generic national list, so you are actually seeing what Southend is meant to run.
Southend is part of a national Grosvenor poker network. Through that network, several branded events and promotions pass through the room over the year.
Rake Races run in September as cash game leaderboard contests. Players earn points through raked hands, with a total prize fund of £15,000 shared among the highest finishers. Grosvenor Live Satellites are small live qualifiers, with buy-ins starting from as low as £0.25. Those feed into larger Grosvenor festivals, including main tour stops. UCOP, the Universal Championship of Poker, is a multi-event series with over 94 separate tournaments spread across the network; at least one of those UCOP events has been reported at the Southend venue, and combined prize pools across the series can go up to around £1,000,000.
The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour, often just called GUKPT, is the main national tour that the brand highlights. Southend is not currently listed as one of the full GUKPT legs, but the room does host satellites and qualifiers for stops at other Grosvenor casinos in Coventry, Manchester, London, Luton, Leeds, Edinburgh and Blackpool. If you are local to Southend, that makes the room a realistic way in to bigger events without needing to travel for every qualifier.
